BLK SCL! is hiring. We're looking for a freelance Assistant Producer (Project Delivery) to support BLK SCL! projects — including BLK SCL! Sound, the label — on a fixed-term retainer.
About the role
This is a fixed-term, freelance Assistant Producer (Project Delivery) role supporting BLK SCL! projects, including BLK SCL! Sound (the label). You'll help plan and deliver releases and programme-linked activations by keeping timelines tight, stakeholders aligned, documentation clean, and delivery moving.
You'll work closely with the Creative Director and partners and collaborators to turn creative intent into organised execution — with clear comms, strong follow-through, and high attention to detail.
Contract, pay and time commitment
- Contract type: Freelance services agreement (fixed-term retainer)
- Duration: 12 months
- Start date: 28 September 2026
- Capacity commitment: Up to 96 hours per month (equivalent to 3 days per week on average), across 48 weeks during the contract term
- Working pattern: Flexible by default. Time is scheduled around delivery needs; NBTM does not guarantee or require specific days/hours each week
- Fee: £1,440 per month (based on 96 hours at £15/hour)
- Scope management: If NBTM requests work beyond the monthly capacity, additional hours must be agreed in writing and will be billed at £15/hour
- Payment: Monthly in arrears on receipt of invoice
- Tax/NI/VAT: As a freelancer, you are responsible for your own tax and National Insurance (and VAT if applicable)
- Other clients: You may work for other clients/organisations provided there is no conflict of interest and BLK SCL! delivery commitments are met
- Termination: Either party may terminate with 30 days' notice in writing (and immediately for material breach/confidentiality)
Location and working style
- You must be based in the Liverpool City Region
- The majority of the role can be delivered remotely
- Some in-person attendance will be required for key moments (events, sessions, programme delivery) with notice
- Weekend work is not expected, but occasional flexibility around live moments may be helpful
Representation & encouragement
BLK SCL! exists to develop, champion and amplify Black music voices and culture in the North and devolved nations. We strongly encourage applications from Black candidates and from people who are based in the Liverpool City Region with a deep, lived connection to Black music culture and community.
How we work
This role suits someone who enjoys a fast-moving, relationship-led way of working.
- We work across multiple projects at once — you'll need to be comfortable switching between tasks and keeping a clear grip on priorities.
- We value clarity and follow-through: if you say you'll do something, you do it — and you keep people updated.
- We keep comms direct and respectful. You should be confident asking questions early rather than guessing.
- We care about the details (names, links, dates, formatting, version control) because that's how projects land well.
- We're deeply rooted in culture and community — you should understand what it means to show up with care, discretion and good judgement.
Who this is perfect for
Perfect for you if…
- You're genuinely excited by BLK SCL's purpose and you're motivated by culture-led work that has real community impact.
- You love Black British Music and music culture.
- You're naturally organised and you enjoy making things run smoother (trackers, calendars, tidy folders, clear notes).
- You're proactive: you spot what's missing, you suggest the next step, and you don't wait to be chased.
- You communicate clearly and calmly, and you're comfortable working with artists, partners and stakeholders.
- You can hold detail without losing the bigger picture (you care about the small things and what the work is trying to achieve).
- You're happy working remotely most of the time, but can show up in person in the Liverpool City Region when needed.
This might not be for you if…
- You need lots of daily hand-holding or you prefer very rigid, step-by-step instructions for every task.
- You struggle with switching between different workstreams or you find fast-moving projects stressful.
- You're not confident with admin basics (scheduling, note-taking, file management, follow-ups).
- You're looking for a role that is mostly creative output.
- You're not comfortable working with discretion, or you prefer to share information casually.
Key responsibilities
Project planning & delivery (programmes, releases and activations)
- Own and maintain delivery roadmaps for releases and programme-linked activations (milestones, dependencies, critical paths)
- Translate creative goals into clear briefs, requirements and timelines for partners and collaborators
- Run weekly delivery check-ins, action logs, and decision tracking to keep work moving and unblock issues early
- Ensure delivery across assets and release requirements
Stakeholder management
- Keep comms tight: clear updates, clear asks, documented decisions, proactive follow-ups
- Support escalation and resolution when priorities shift, timelines compress, or approvals stall
Operations & documentation
- Build and maintain trackers, templates and shared docs (release plans, asset checklists, comms logs, meeting notes, action registers)
- Maintain organised project folders and a single source of truth for each release / activation
- Coordinate key sessions (listening sessions, launch moments, partner meetings) including logistics when needed
Editorial, insight & opportunity research
- Research cultural moments, partners, venues, talent and opportunities aligned to BLK SCL!'s purpose and talent
- Turn research into actionable recommendations
- Support editorial planning across BLK SCL channels (themes, calendars, story angles) to align comms with release and programme timelines
Comms & channel support
- Support drafting, formatting and scheduling of newsletters/blog updates and social posts (Instagram and LinkedIn)
- Help maintain a consistent tone and high-quality presentation across outward-facing comms
- Monitor community responses and flag priority messages, risks, or opportunities quickly
Reporting, risk & continuous improvement
- Track progress against plans, identify risks early, and propose mitigations
- Capture learnings after key moments (what worked / what didn't) and improve processes for the next cycle
General / team support
- Provide day-to-day support to the Creative Director across BLK SCL! projects
- Take on other tasks that support delivery, as required

- Strong research skills and ability to turn findings into clear summaries, recommendations and next steps
- Confidence using Google Workspace (Docs/Sheets/Drive) and/or Microsoft Word/Excel to manage trackers, notes and documentation
